Since the early 1990s, a movement of aesthetic globalization has profoundly changed the art world—at least its geopolitics. Contemporary African art has asserted itself as a living reality, but not without reservations: an image frozen in its traditional forms, especially since these were strongly linked to the history of modern Western art, continued to dominate people's minds.
If a Foundation like the one created by the Zinsou family exists, bringing together major artists of today's art, it was the result of patient work and great persistence. It took time before more hybrid art forms, in resonance with Western contemporary art, were recognized. With a selection of works by 37 African artists, characterized by a porosity between reality and the supernatural, between the everyday and legend, the Hôtel des Collections in Montpellier celebrates the militant activity of the Zinsou Foundation, firmly anchored in its Beninese context while reaching out to the entire world.

Artists : Léonce Raphaël Agbodjelou, Ishola Akpo, Joël Andrianomearisoa, Aston, Sammy Baloji, Pierre Bodo, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Seyni Awa Camara, Chéri Chérin, Jérémy Demester, Jean Depara, Omar Victor Diop, Kifouli Dossou, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Samuel Fosso, Pauline Guerrier, Romuald Hazoumè, Seydou Keïta, Adama Kouyaté, George Lilanga, Ibrahim Mahama, Esther Mahlangu, Emo de Medeiros, Moké, Zanele Muholi, Rigobert Nimi, JD 'Okhai Ojeikere, Kwesi Owusu-Ankomah, Gérard Quenum, Sadek Rahim, Lyndi Sales, Chéri Samba, Amadou Sanogo, Malick Sidibé, Aïcha Snoussi, Sanlé Sory, Cyprien Tokoudagba
