Yves Zurstrassen (1956 - Liège, Belgium) has been exploring the free forms of abstraction for forty years. A self-taught painter and a proponent of free color, he has developed a particular technique of collages and detachments of paper forms which he uses like stencils on superimposed layers of paint. This succession of applications and removals, where colors are added and subtracted, traps time in the painting, when the last of them to appear on the canvas is in reality the first applied.
This new temporality simultaneously affirms and erases the gesture, while the artist's intuition serves his initial conception of composition, slowly developed through a series of studies. His work is exhibited in numerous galleries, art centers, and museums in Belgium, Germany, northern European countries, Spain, and France.
