What about vernacular ? is a book resulting from a three-month study road trip led by three young architects in the American East. It recounts their journey and presents twelve themes that bring together traditional and contemporary constructions, all testifying to a " common sense » constructive and ecological. During their trip, they are led to study the barns of New England, the constructions and the refined furniture of the Shakers - inspiration for the Moderns -, the small vacation houses of Cape Cod, the modern achievements on the principle of the A-frame , a simple and functional construction system, the architecture of covered bridges since the 17th century (a highly preserved heritage in the United States), some astonishing houses built by Louis I. Kahn on the theme of indigenous materials, the barns of Pennsylvania, emblematic achievements of Frank Lloyd Wright, the mythical log cabins , the experiments in economic construction in Alabama at the initiative of the Rural Studio, certain works of E. Fay Jones (inspired by Wright) and several types of rural houses such as the dogtrot house, the shotgun house or the Creole hut. What about vernacular? reports on the in situ discovery by the three young women of these architectures which have become inspiring models again through the artisanal know-how summoned, the natural beauty of the materials used and the absence of technological challenge. Their work highlights on the one hand the need to take the time to look in order to understand and feel the places, and that of building a sort of " library » of sensations, and on the other hand the formative virtues of travel, sources of encounters, exchanges and dynamic experiences.
