Vuitton, a partner of this publication, will open its archives for the occasion. Its images will recount some of the journeys mentioned here. Creator of trunks for the most diverse and exotic uses, it accompanied new modes of travel and participated in the emergence of the modern globetrotter.
The new means of transport and equipment that appeared in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries offered unprecedented ways to explore the world. Transatlantic liners, caterpillar cars, long-haul planes, zeppelins, and express trains allowed for different travel experiences and opened up new horizons. From then on, distant countries were no longer accessible only to aristocrats, explorers, and adventurers of all kinds; their discovery was open to travelers with multiple curiosities: scholars, artists, dandies, archaeologists, writers, secret agents, traders, and more. For everyone, the world became a book that could be explored more easily, luxuriously, or picturesquely. The five continents are crisscrossed, crossed, traveled on foot, by sleigh, by bicycle, by Jeep, by steamer, or flown over by balloon, seaplane, glider... These means of locomotion, new for some, allow us to see and perceive space, landscapes and places differently, the ends of the world become tangible. These means of traveling the world also constitute new instruments of knowledge. Through fifty epics led by great travelers but also by eccentrics, sportsmen, adventurers, this work will evoke the most astonishing journeys made from the middle of the 19th century to the present day.
