Journeys of Memory is the new monographic book by Patrick Zachmann that accompanies his major retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Jewish Art and History in Paris, running throughout the winter of 2021. It brings together a dozen of his major series, some of which have never been published.
The photographic work of Patrick Zachmann, a member of the Magnum agency, is complex and dense. It can be read in particular in light of several recurring themes that run through it. The first, and one of the most important, is the question of Jewish identity. He seeks out, explores, and discovers this identity, embarking on introspection within his own family, then in various European countries, at a gathering of camp survivors or with a Parisian community. This work questions the very notion of a community, of an identity, as strong as the Jewish one. From his reflections will be born other paths that the photographer easily takes, such as those of exile or disappearance. He does not focus solely on Jewish identity, but also photographs South Africa and its anti-Nazi rallies, Rwanda and the survivors of the genocide, or the disappearance of people during the Chilean dictatorship. In this body of work in black and white and color, Zachmann highlights the fragility of our relationships with others, while revisiting his work. Voyages de mémoire is the new major retrospective of Patrick Zachmann's work, since So Long, China (EXB, 2016) at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.
