The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon and the National Museum of Oman have designed two joint exhibitions that offer a look at their respective collections. In Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate, the Fragrant Journeys exhibition (October 17, 2022 – May 7, 2023) presented objects and sculptures from the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon from Antiquity to the 20th century, echoing the theme of the Perfume Route. In Lyon, the Journey to the Land of Incense exhibition presents some major works from the National Museum of Oman – ceramic vases, incense burners, architectural decoration, manuscripts, jewelry, etc. – which invite visitors to discover the rich heritage and culture of Oman.
A legendary country, famous for the beauty of its landscapes between sea, mountains, and desert, and its gentle way of life, the Sultanate of Oman is also rich in a thousand-year-old history. Its territory, open to the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, and connected to the main roads of the Arabian Peninsula, has always been conducive to trade. Throughout its history, Oman has exported copper, minerals, shells, herbs, frankincense—the precious resin of which the best quality is extracted from Boswellia sacra, an incense tree that grows in the Dhofar region—thoroughbred horses, and, nowadays, gas and oil. These contacts with Mesopotamia, India, Iran, Egypt, the Mediterranean, the eastern coast of Africa, and Asia have always favored the development of new cultures and the spread of know-how and knowledge.
