The wonderful drawings gathered under this cover have a story. A very ancient story, beginning in the 14th century, with a certain Niccolò da Poggibonsi of Tuscany, a Franciscan monk, who undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Upon his return, armed with his experience, Niccolò wrote a veritable travel guide for future pilgrims. The book was a success. It was called: The Book of Overseas. In the following century, Niccolò's book was translated into German, or rather transformed, transposed, modified, to adapt it to its new audience. Thus, from now on, it would tell the story of a long expedition supposedly carried out by Gabriel Muffel. A new guide for travelers was born. And like all great guides worthy of the name, its text is richly illustrated with all the marvelous drawings that the reader will discover in this work and which make this incomparable guide, unique in the world, without a doubt, an art book in its own right.
