This Russian artist was born in Leningrad in 1952. He began painting at the age of nine and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts at the age of twelve. He graduated as a painter and decorator in 1973 and became a theater designer. Like many of his colleagues, he experienced the destruction of his works, as art was then very strictly regulated and contemporary art was censored. He works in watercolor, dry pastel and Indian ink; all these techniques are used in his drawings, which depict essential characters from Russian legends.
The handsome Prince Ivan, Princess Yaroslavna, the dragon Gorynnytah, and the witch Babayaga (who is a good witch). Working with all the classical techniques, Vladimir Chernyshev cannot confine himself to a framework. His colored pencil drawings are unique and his works immediately identifiable. His oil palette is vivid and rich in color. In his pastels, he restores the same depth of color.
Each composition conceals secrets, mysteries to be discovered, interpreted, and meditated upon. It draws us into a world of magic, where messages are intertwined with an analysis of our world.
