Who are these two Venetians and what are they doing on this terrace?
We know that this panel, painted by Vittore Carpaccio in the 15th century, exhibited at the Correr Museum in Venice, was considered "the most beautiful painting in the world." We also know that this painting is, in fact, only one piece of a much larger composition, one of the other parts of which was found in the 20th century... in California! But this painting nevertheless remains a great mystery.
The author imagines what this work could have been like as a whole. He offers a "decoding" that leads to a seductive and disturbing interpretation, giving women an unexpected role in our world, and finds echoes of this in two more recent paintings – by Gustave Caillebotte and Edward Hopper.
