Founded in 1911 by Narcisse Villet in the heart of the French Jura region, in Moirans-en-Montagne, the Vilac company perpetuates a long regional tradition: the production of turned and lacquered wooden toys. The history of the company, initially a family business, follows the twists and turns of a century that has seen a succession of crises, market developments, the impact of competition, and relocations. Today, without losing the style and spirit that have forged its identity for a hundred years, Vilac has established itself worldwide by boldly cultivating a love of beauty and paying particular attention to the design of its creations. This book presents more than three hundred toys from the 1910s to the present day. We find the traditional bowling games, bibis and whistles, the essential animals on wheels with Yabon the frog, Roxy the dachshund, Bob the alligator and Rosy the cow, the famous multicolored cars, musical instruments and theaters of the world, the childhood heroes Mickey, Snoopy, Babar and Elmer, but also the artist toys of Benjamin Rabier, Keith Haring or Hervé Di Rosa. Amidst the abundance of modern materials, wood remains today a wonderful medium for dreams.
