For centuries, nearly every great architect spent time in Rome, studying the ancient ruins to absorb the wisdom of their builders. This exhibition celebrates the avant-garde nature of Roman architecture while exploring its relationship with contemporary architecture. It contrasts the major principles of Roman architecture (urban and social organization, light, air and water circulation, structures and materials) with the reuse of ancient monuments and their contemporary reinterpretations. The visitor itinerary is organized around the themes of "reuse," "design," "light," "breathe," "build," "connect," and "inhabit." The exhibition offers a dialogue between the most famous monuments of Antiquity, the remains of the Roman monuments of Narbonne, and the contemporary achievements of the Foster + Partners agency. The architecture of the Narbo Via Museum, built by the Foster + Partners agency and Nîmes architect Jean Capia, is in the spotlight. The exhibition is co-produced by the Narbo Via Museum and the Foster + Partners agency, curated by Dr. Tom True (British School at Rome), who brought together specialists in ancient architecture, with the participation of the museum team. More than a hundred works are brought together, mainly from French, Italian, and English institutions, with a scenography by Adrien Gardère, to whom the museum owes the enhancement of its collections.
