José Maria Veloso Salgado (1864-1945), a major figure of Portuguese naturalism still little known in France, forged strong ties with this country and its artists. From his arrival in Paris in 1888, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibited at the Salon, to his stays in Brittany and on the Opal Coast, the works of Salgado's French years reveal an artist in search of himself. This experimental phase, probably the most daring of his career, was notably marked by his encounter with Adrien Demont and Virginie Demont-Breton and the strong and lasting friendship he formed with this couple of painters who inspired him.
Produced by the Boulogne-sur-Mer Museum in partnership with the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea (Lisbon), the exhibition Veloso Salgado. From Lisbon to Wissant, the Journey of a Portuguese Painter and the catalogue dedicated to him, offer a fresh perspective on the painter's artistic career. They also contribute to enriching our knowledge of the artists who gravitated around the Wissant School and the Portuguese-French artistic exchanges at the turn of the 20th century.
