How can you become an artist when you were born a woman, at a time when those who belonged to the "second sex" could not access the École nationale des beaux-arts? It was at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that women painters and sculptors fought to be recognized as artists in their own right, moving, like Suzanne Valadon, from the status of model to that of accomplished painter. Co-produced by the Royal Monastery of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Limoges, this book, Valadon and her contemporaries, reveals the little-known role of women in the artistic revolutions of the nascent modernity from 1880 to 1940, bringing together nearly 50 women artists. Famous women like Camille Claudel, Marie Laurencin, Sonia Delaunay, and Séraphine de Senlis, and others less well-known, they demonstrate that artistic talent has no gender.
