In 1804, a magnificent album of polychrome engravings dedicated to the famous Yoshiwara pleasure district was published in Edo, under the prestigious signatures of the painter Utamaro and the writer Jippensha Ikku. This Almanac of Green Houses illustrates, in about twenty delicately colored prints, the customs and traditions of this reserved district. This artistic and literary description, tinged with humor, of the splendors of the lives of Edo courtesans, was a resounding success. In France, the work was made famous by Edmond de Goncourt.
Utamaro's original prints are reproduced in facsimile. They are accompanied by a complete translation of Jippensha Ikku's text and an in-depth commentary.
