Chinese art occupies a prominent place at the Louvre. More than 600 works, notably from the collections of the patron Adèle de Rothschild, the royal collections, and that of Adolphe Thiers, who from 1871 to 1873 was President of the French Republic. For the first time, the latter is presented in the exhibition "A Chinese Passion," which reveals to the general public the wealth of singular works, testifying to the passion for Chinese culture and art of this great political figure of the 19th century.
Scrolls, prints, porcelain, jade, lacquer, ivories... Nearly 170 pieces, art objects and pictorial works are brought together, illustrating the history, landscapes, knowledge and beliefs of China in the 18th and 19th centuries. The visit also highlights the curious eye of Adolphe Thiers, an informed collector, fascinated by imperial China as well as the Renaissance, and among many treasures, presents an exceptional scroll from the Qingming Shanghe Tu , made for the Qianlong Emperor.
