This book is dedicated to the artistic achievements of the first glass painting workshop in Limousin, created by Francis Chigot (1879-1960) at the beginning of the 20th century. This immense and exceptional production of stained glass is brought to light thanks to a significant selection of stained glass windows, models, cartoons and sketches of stained glass windows designed in Limoges between 1907 and 1960; various documents – plates and photographic prints, advertisements, etc. – or works – enamels, pastels, etc. – also seek to shed light on it.
Over the course of this half-century of intense activity, some five hundred buildings, public monuments – civil and religious – or private buildings, spread across various parts of the world, received bays of very varied natures, attesting to the influence and renown of this workshop led by Francis Chigot, a brilliant colorist and enterprising industrialist. This personality, both major and little-known in the field of stained glass, knew how to surround himself with cartoonists and collaborators, who also deserve to come out of the shadows as they held an essential place in the evolution of the art of stained glass during the first half of the 20th century.
The works presented are displayed according to a chronological and thematic logic, following the biography of Francis Chigot and the development of his studio, with a few detours to highlight certain more singular aspects.
