Ulysses, Journey into a Mediterranean of Legends aims to demonstrate the influence of this character on Western culture and the history of the arts.
The story of Odysseus's journey is indeed a formidable iconographic source: all sorts of symbols are at play, evoking the divinities of nature, the human condition, and his connection to the world around him. It is also a universal philosophical and narrative foundation: each place, each character in the story is the pretext for a question deeply linked to humanity. The longevity of the text attributed to Homer never ceases to surprise. Its appropriation is continuous: in everyday language, where we find the vocabulary from the work, as well as in the visual arts, in music and the performing arts, for which the Odyssey is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
The exhibition, and the accompanying catalogue, are designed as a journey in the footsteps of Ulysses around the Mediterranean. Sculptures, ceramics, art objects, drawings, photographs, and paintings, spanning a period from Antiquity to the present day, as well as contemporary installations specially designed for the exhibition, will show how the styles and forms used by artists throughout history are constructed, sometimes resulting from unexpected syncretisms linked to changing mentalities and aesthetic developments. For the Odyssey constructs a visual journey that allows visitors to delve back into the entire succession of styles in the history of Western art.
