Romanesque art is fashionable: our modern eye is more attracted by the imagery of Romanesque churches than by that of Gothic churches. But this preference is not always accompanied by the knowledge that would allow us to understand its meanings. By focusing on tympanums and portals, the authors show how the sculpted decoration is in no way esoteric. It has an educational role, both theological and moral, and is also linked to the liturgical rituals (prayers, readings, processions) that take place at the doors of churches.
