The Petit Palais is showcasing its graphic arts department with a selection of the great masters of printmaking, from Durer to Toulouse-Lautrec.
Compiled by Eugène and Auguste Dutuit in the 19th century, this collection brings together more than 12,000 prints signed by the greatest painter-engravers of their time, from the Northern schools - notably the almost complete engraved works of Durer and Rembrandt -, with some remarkable inclusions by other artists, such as Jacques Callot or Goya, great master of aquatint.
This collection will be complemented by that of the Musée de l'Estampe moderne, created in 1908 under the impetus of curator Henry Lapauze to host contemporary creation, and in particular color prints, thanks to the support of art dealer and publisher Georges Petit. Bracquemond, Chahine, Delacroix, Fantin-Latour, Steinlen, Toulouse-Lautrec...: a collection which, enriched by subsequent purchases and donations, has allowed the Petit Palais to offer a "history of modern engraving [...] in its rarest specimens and in its most varied forms."
Superbly illustrated, this work offers a true panorama of printmaking from the 15th to the 19th century, through its most illustrious representatives.
