Official catalogue of the exhibition Treasures of Venice, the Cini Collection at the Hôtel de Caumont in Aix-en-Provence from November 19, 2021 to March 27, 2022. The Hôtel de Caumont - art center of Aix-en-Provence takes its visitors on a journey to Venice by presenting a selection of masterpieces from the Cini collection, one of the most important collections of ancient Italian art. The paintings, sculptures, drawings and precious objects presented and reproduced in this work are part of one of the most prestigious collections of Italian art, from the 16th to the 18th century, brought together by the entrepreneur and philanthropist Vittorio Cini (Ferrara 1885 - Venice 1977). In 1951, the latter created the Giorgio Cini Foundation, an internationally renowned research and training center, named in memory of his son, who died prematurely.
Today, the Cini Collection is divided between the Galleria di Palazzo Cini, the collector's former residence on the Canal Grande, and the important headquarters of the Giorgio Cini Foundation, on the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Alongside the great names of Tuscan painting—Botticelli, Fra Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Piero di Cosimo—and Venetian painting, such as Lorenzo and Giandomenico Tiepolo, the exhibition presents key pieces from the Ferrarese Renaissance. Complemented by a selection of sculptures, enamels, and ivories, as well as a selection of drawings and illuminations, the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue reflect the technical and stylistic variety of a flourishing period in Italian art, as well as the refined taste of one of the most important Italian collectors of the 20th century.
