An atypical yet essential figure in Italian literature, Gabriele d'Annunzio considered the design, layout, and decoration of a home to be the creation of a work in itself. Unique spaces fostering creativity, his living spaces compose an imaginary book studded with symbols and allegories that translate his inner world.
Inspired by the European decadent movement, his aesthetic vision is reflected in his writings as well as in his successive homes in France and Italy. Exotic relics, ancient art objects, modern works, luxurious fabrics, oriental rugs, casts of classical sculptures, lighting fixtures, and trinkets are staged by the writer, poet, and playwright, like mysterious settings.
The idea of the residence as autobiography is fully expressed in the Vittoriale degli Italiani, one of the most intriguing architectural and landscape creations in Europe, facing Lake Garda. From 1921 onwards, the poet blended, with absolute modernity, the public dimension, the creation of art, heroic ideals and the memory of his life, extraordinary in its sensuality, refinement and rejection of conventions: the "vivere inimitabile".
Illustrated with rare documents and more than a hundred poetic and sensual contemporary photographs, the book invites you to immerse yourself in this phantasmagorical universe, which has inspired the world of fashion, cinema, graphic and plastic arts, architecture and decoration.
