Kyoto, the ancient capital and cradle of traditional Japanese culture, is the birthplace of the Rinpa school, one of Japan's major artistic movements. Developed at the dawn of the 17th century by Hon'ami Koetsu and Tawaraya Sotatsu, the Rinpa decorative style gave rise to a unique aesthetic sensibility whose influence continues to this day. The exhibition "Treasures of Kyoto: Three Centuries of Rinpa Creation" presents priceless masterpieces for the first time outside Japan, such as the famous pair of screens Gods of Wind and Thunder by Tawaraya Sotatsu, a "National Treasure" belonging to the Kennin-ji temple in Kyoto and visible only on very rare occasions. This book presents more than sixty works - paintings, prints, ceramic, wood and lacquer objects - created by different generations of Rinpa artists born in Kyoto.
