Although it boasts nearly 1,500 drawings, the collection of the Cabinet of Graphic Arts at the Palace of Versailles remains little known. Comprising numerous large-scale sheets of particularly meticulous craftsmanship, it was assembled as soon as Louis-Philippe decided to transform the royal residence into a historical museum. Three major themes were favored: the iconography of the palace and its grounds, the history of France, and portraits of those who had been important to the nation. The selection of drawings presented in this book is intended today to lift the veil and highlight the diversity, importance, and beauty of this rare collection.
