Of the Prague that Apollinaire sang about and its magnificent bridge with hedge statues that led from yesterday to forever , […] of this bubbling of ideas and hopes, there more intense than anywhere else […], what remains for us? We have Toyen left. » André Breton, 1953

With her poetic and provocative oeuvre, Czech artist Marie Čermínová, known as Toyen, is an exceptional figure in surrealism and post-war art. A pioneer of the avant-garde in both Prague and Paris, profoundly free and politically engaged, her work was nourished in many ways by her collaborations and friendships with Paul Éluard, André Breton, Benjamin Péret, Heisler, Styrsky, and Yves Tanguy.

This catalogue, which accompanied the exhibitions in Prague (National Gallery) and Hamburg (Kunsthalle) before the one in Paris, is structured by numerous scientific contributions and composed of more than 500 illustrations. It is the first major French monograph of Toyen's work, offering a look at the links that united him to the Surrealist group.

Enriched with previously unpublished works from all periods of the artist's life, this book allows us to discover or rediscover the abundant production of an artist whose extraordinary life sought to embrace what links desire and representation.
