The Painter of Movement, Jacopo Robusti, was born in Venice in 1519. He was nicknamed "il Tintoretto" because his father was a dyer. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his birth, the catalogue traces the rise of the young Tintoretto, the decisive years of his career, and explores how he developed into the most brilliant exponent of Venetian Mannerism. Unlike the retrospective presented in 2012 in Rome, the exhibition does not separate the painter's work from its artistic context, but rather places them in the closest possible correlation. Religious and allegorical, mythological and erotic paintings, as well as portraits by the young Tintoretto, are displayed alongside similar works by his models, competitors, and assistants. Drawings, engravings, and sculptures mark the broad cultural horizon of the artist's early years. This exhibition highlights Tintoretto's artistic ambition, his decorative works, the influence of contemporary theatre on his art, his eminently three-dimensional thinking, his working method and his collaboration with Giovanni Galizzi, his portraits and his vision of women.
