A broad discursive study of the cultural geography of the avant-gardes of Central Europe in the interwar period.
This richly illustrated book presents the artistic emulation that manifested itself in Central Europe between the two wars, challenging the "center-periphery" concept that has long prevailed in the writing of art history. Refusing a strictly chronological journey or a geographical division, the author offers a synthetic reflection on the exchanges between different centers, due in particular to the mobility of artists and the circulation of ideas via printed media. The notion of international communication is at the heart of this project. The study, nourished by research carried out over several years in various countries, emphasizes the transdisciplinarity and versatility of artists, on the curiosity for new forms of expression and for new creative technologies. It draws a large territory with blurred borders where a collective utopian project was built over twenty years.
