The peak of the landscape motif in printmaking developed in Japan in the early 19th century, when travel became one of the Japanese's favorite leisure activities. The album of 200 prints presented in the exhibition was produced to commemorate the procession from Edo to Kyoto in 1863, via the Tokaido route, of the shogun Iemochi, who had gone to pay his respects to the Emperor. It was acquired by the great ethnologist and sinologist Victor Segalen in 1900. This album, which has remained intact and in a remarkably fresh condition, is accompanied by a selection of prints from the collections of the Guimet Museum, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige and illustrating the same theme, notably his series of the Fifty-three Relays of the Tokaido.
The book presents the 65 most emblematic prints of this rich production.
