This legend, dating from the 11th or 12th century, tells the story of the love affair between Bilhana, a learned Brahmin from Kashmir, and Sasikala, daughter of King Virasima. The king, dazzled by the intelligence of his daughter, is taken in by the Brahmin. Very quickly, like Heloise and Abelard, the two characters fall in love and meet at night in the princess's room to indulge in their passion—until they are surprised. Bilhana is then imprisoned and then sentenced to death by the king. In his dungeon, he recalls the moments spent in the company of the princess and composes a collection of fifty stanzas. The collection has enjoyed remarkable popularity in India and then in the West, and it can be said that it is one of the best-known Sanskrit works to date, the epitome of Indian erotic literature.
