What could be more logical for a site museum built around two Roman theatres than to program an exhibition on the shows that took place there in Antiquity?
The Lugdunum Museum is pleased to offer a stunning behind-the-scenes look at these performances with its temporary exhibition "Spectacular! Entertainment among the Romans."
It is not just a question of theatre, since ancient Lyon also hosted chariot races in its circus and gladiatorial combats in its amphitheater, of which we have preserved some vestiges.
The exhibition therefore presents the shows that took place in these buildings, both to understand the architecture and the sporting, political and social implications.
For the occasion, the accompanying catalog takes on a unique form. This volume contains interviews with various specialists; object zooms to explore the secrets of the works; illuminating infographics and illustrations; and, of course, in-depth articles to delve deeper into the role and place of entertainment at multiple levels: the Empire, the city, and Roman society.
From sensory perceptions to the place of women on stage and in the audience, it is time to deconstruct certain clichés inherited from pop culture that have shaped our vision of the gladiator, the charioteer or their supporters.
