On April 11, 2019, the dictatorial and Islamist regime of Omar al-Bashir, in power in Khartoum for thirty years, was overthrown by a popular movement. For the previous four months, the sit-in in the heart of the capital had been the target of so-called "security" forces, at the same time as it was the crucible of the intellectual, political and artistic ferment where the revolutionary dream of a democratic Sudan was taking shape.
After the dictator's fall, negotiations stalled between the junta that succeeded him and the opposition, hostile to a military-led transition. On June 3, the junta bloodily destroyed the sit-in. But on the 30th, the "Million March" demonstrated the determination of the Sudanese people and their deep desire for democracy. Following international mediation, negotiations resumed and resulted in the creation in August of a transitional government, composed of civilians and military personnel, which was responsible for leading the country until elections, scheduled for 2022.
This book captures this suspended moment, this “year zero.” The photographs and most of the texts in it are written by Sudanese women and men. It recounts from the inside the stages of the rebellion, from the most exciting to the most tragic. Sometimes fiery, even lyrical, it is often poignant.
