Witches and sorcerers have existed since the dawn of time, but witchcraft had a particular character in Christian Europe, where it was studied and theorized by both the Church and temporal powers. This is evidenced by a large number of books, trials, convictions, and executions during the Renaissance.
Turning away from God and his Church, sorcerers and witches allow themselves to be seduced by the wiles of the devil, to whom they devote an idolatrous cult, the supreme manifestation of which is the ritual homage they pay him during certain nocturnal ceremonies called their sabbath.

For artists, the theme of witchcraft is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Bruegel the Elder and Frans II Francken display their evil erudition. Others, like Dürer, are more interested in the contrast between the plump body of a young, novice witch and the smoked body of a stubborn old woman. While Hans Baldung, "Grien" (meaning green as the devil), shows naked witches covering themselves in ointment to travel to the sabbath by air.
