A contemporary of the avant-gardes of the early 20th century, Georges Rouault (1871-1958) participated in the 1905 Salon d'Automne, known as the "Fauves," with Matisse, Camoin, Derain, and Manguin. A painter of nudes, portraits, and landscapes, he was also a ceramist, engraver, and book illustrator for Ambroise Vollard, who was his dealer from 1917; then a designer of models for tapestry and stained glass. Inspired by religious subjects and the circus, of which he was a fervent spectator, Rouault established himself as the painter of society's outcasts, of whom he gave an expressive and intense image, often saturated with matter. But his artistic creation was also coupled with an intense and continuous literary production, which this collection allows us to rediscover.
