Born in Croatia in 1913 and trained at the Zagerb Academy of Fine Arts, Slavko Kopac's name is generally associated with his role as curator of the Collection de l'art brut founded by Jean Dubuffet. Yet the Croatian artist left behind a body of work whose richness reflects the complexity of the century he lived through. Having emigrated to Italy in 1943 and then settled in Paris in 1948, where he rubbed shoulders with the Surrealists, he explored the most unexpected techniques and materials in a poetic of the marvelous.
This work, the first monograph of the artist, who died in Paris in 1995, reveals the life and work of a little-known creator at the center of the major issues of modernity.
