Originally from Mailly in Champagne and documented in Avignon from 1533 to 1561, the painter Simon de Châlons left us an abundant production, often signed and dated. Collaborating, in his early days, with the painter Henri Guigues, he retained from the latter a constant use of Raphael's engraved models which, combined with those of a Dürer or a Lucas de Leyde, created an Italianate language appreciated by a large clientele of nobles, patricians and ecclesiastics. This book, which is dedicated to him, pays particular attention to the conditions of the painter's profession but also to the question of cultural exchanges between the centers of eastern France, on the axis determined by the Seine, the Saône and the Rhône. It constitutes the fifth volume of the editorial series of the Resurrected History of Art which, based on the Geneva program Painting in France during the Renaissance , aims to make known or rediscover leading painters.
