A founding tale of Iranian culture, a mythical and historical epic, the Shâhnâmeh or Book of Kings was composed in Persian in the early 11th century by the poet Ferdowsi. The breadth of the episodes described, from the creation of the world and the birth of pre-Islamic Persian civilization to the Arab conquest of Iran in the mid-7th century, makes it a work without equal in world literature. Copied and illuminated almost continuously, it gave rise to a corpus of several thousand manuscripts and some of the most beautiful miniatures in the history of Persian art. Nearly two centuries after the publication of Jules Mohl's prose translation of the Book of Kings, Pierre Lecoq offers the first complete French translation into verse of this major work of Persian literature. His text combines historical and philological rigor with the restoration of the rhymes and epic spirit of the Persian original, to the great delight of readers. The book is illuminated with fifty miniatures from a 16th-century Safavid manuscript, as well as original drawings by Scott Pennor. It includes an index of proper names.
