Introduction, translation and commentary by Pierre Pellegrin.

Diogenes Laertius reports the opinion that the first of the skeptics was Homer; he thus says, in his doxographer's words, that skepticism follows philosophy "as the shadow follows the body." Now the only complete exposition of this reverse side of Greek rationalism to have come down to us is that of Sextus Empiricus, and the Pyrrhonian Sketches, a small compendium of skeptical philosophy from the 2nd century AD, are one of the keys to ancient thought. When the Sketches were translated by Henri Estienne in 1562, they were immediately recognized as one of the references of the new thought. From this work, too disdained by specialists until recently (there was no longer even one in French translation bookstores), we give here the full text accompanied by a philosophical glossary.
