The work of Senegalese intellectual and statesman Léopold Sédar Senghor (1909-2001) has been widely discussed and commented upon by generations born after independence, with successive rejections and rereadings. Today, Senghor is a sought-after figure by many African intellectuals around the world.
The exhibition "Senghor and the Arts. Reinventing the Universal" turns away from a hagiographic approach to reinterpret the questions that haunted Senghor more than half a century ago. He affirmed Africa's role in writing its history, both past and present, and defended the idea of a "rendezvous of giving and receiving," engaging in dialogue with the rest of the world to achieve a civilization of the universal.
This catalogue aims to present and question the cultural policy of Léopold Sédar Senghor but also to construct a sort of "manual of Senghorian thought" made up of essays, archival texts, interviews, unpublished photographs and reproductions of works of art that accompanied the life and work of Senghor.
