A book featuring stunning photographs of voodoo rituals. Few religions in the world have been as maligned as voodoo. Yet its name, borrowed from the language of the Fon people of Benin, means nothing more than "god" or "divine." Voodoo, or more accurately, vodoun, thus refers to the ancient gods of Benin, with which many fascinating beliefs and customs are associated in Africa, but also among peoples of the African diaspora (Haitian voodoo). In these regions, far from the gaze of Western industrial nations, parallel worlds continue to exist, in which ancestral traditional knowledge allows people to find effective solutions to all their problems. This vast secret knowledge about medicinal plants and their use is directly linked to a worldview in which every human is part of a meaningful spiritual and magical whole. During numerous study trips spanning several years, the renowned ethnologist and photographer Henning Christoph gained access to these spheres and documented them. It often took several visits to the most remote regions before mutual trust was sufficient to allow him to participate in the events. He was then able to photograph events that had previously remained taboo to the outside world, some of which were considered extinct. His images powerfully demonstrate that the scientific approach to facts and explanations is only one way of depicting our existence. The photographs of rituals, divine representations, and secret societies collected in this book constitute a collection of unique scope. Many of the ceremonies have never before been presented in a photo book and shed new light on a poorly understood, yet ancient and authentic African religion: Vodoun.
