We were keen to retain the character of this exchange with Sam Szafran, which took place in 1999 in his studio, without changing any of his vocabulary or syntax, without erasing his deviations, his excesses, or any incorrectness of tone, style or grammar. This was to respect the singularity of the artist, to capture its complexity, between refinement and coarseness, to make its voice heard again, and to find the cadence. Samy, the street kid, was a regular at Les Halles before their destruction, when they were still the lair of the brutal fauna of vendors, thieves and prostitutes. Little by little, slowly, he developed a painting with a refined sensitivity, of great erudition. The dauber, ignorant of the teaching of his practice, will become one of the greatest painters of his time.
