From July 3 to November 6, 2022, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain presents the first exhibition of Australian Aboriginal artist Sally Gabori (c. 1924-2015) in Europe. Born into the Kaiadilt Aboriginal community in northern Australia, Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori led a traditional life until the age of 24, before being relocated to neighboring Mornington Island in 1948. In 2005, at the age of over 80, she painted her first canvas, marking the beginning of a dazzling artistic career. At the time of her death in 2015, she left behind a body of work comprising over 2,000 canvases, fascinating for their spontaneity and absolute originality.
Bringing together more than 90 works, including the paintings presented at the Fondation Cartier, the book accompanying the exhibition offers an opportunity to discover the unique and colorful work of this extraordinary painter, who is one of the greatest contemporary Australian artists.
