The Louis Vuitton Foundation is dedicating a major exhibition to Mark Rothko, bringing together 115 works by the American painter in a presentation that closely reflects the artist's wishes.

Mark Rothko, after settling in the United States, began painting in the early 1930s. While his first figurative works were influenced by ancient mythology and surrealism, he moved towards an abstract aesthetic in the 1940s with his series of Multiform , then that of the Classics and Black and Grays .
His saturated colors with their floating and expansive forms invite a sensitive, tactile experience, allowing the viewer to play a creative role in the work. This vision of the painter aspires to a universal language addressing everyone, far from intellectualization and technical processes of realization.
Behind an apparent mystery and an elusive character imbued with spirituality, his paintings, through their emotional impact, lead us to question the horizon of our origins, our destiny, our existentiality.

This unique exhibition catalogue brings together some 115 works from the greatest institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Tate in London and the Phillips Collection in Washington, and from major international private collections including that of the artist's family.
