The Gates of Hell, considered Auguste Rodin's greatest work, was commissioned by the French government in 1880. The sculptor worked on it for many years, inspired by Dante's Inferno. During Rodin's lifetime, an original model of the upper part of this masterpiece was deposited at the Quimper Museum of Fine Arts. Entitled The Shadows, this group of three people, whose name evokes the souls of the damned, crowns The Gates. Restored, this work is exhibited for the first time alongside the sculptor's many works on the same subject. From drawing to sculpture, this book explores the ways in which Rodin illustrated the theme of The Shadow, according to his imagination and his extraordinary artistic creativity.
