Born in 1921, Robert Mathieu trained as a bronze turner at the Boulle school, but he went on to invent some of the most exceptional light fixtures of his generation.
Following the urgent post-war reconstruction, a whole housing economy was reestablished in France around the great French tradition of decoration and furniture. A young generation from the grandes écoles took hold of it and laid the foundations of what we now call design, i.e., creation in the service of mass production. Robert Mathieu accompanied them with his infinite creativity and his perfect technical expertise. He designed articulated lighting fixtures to illuminate every function of the modern apartment. He manipulated asymmetry like no one else, and his double pendulum systems remain unique in the world.
This first monograph on Robert Mathieu is the result of research by Pascal Cuisinier, who has been interested in post-war French design since the early 2000s. Both scientific and aesthetic, this work aims to introduce the work of Robert Mathieu to both novices and more knowledgeable collectors and to shed a little more light on this prosperous period experienced by the decorative arts in France during the Trente Glorieuses.
