Creator of free figuration in the early 1980s, Robert Combas prefers images to speeches... In this book, however, he is given the floor during an unpublished interview from 1989, conducted by Lionel Balouin, current director of the Châteauroux School of Fine Arts. The artist reveals his "pictorial cuisine", made up of a dose of drawing, a handful of colors and boundless inventiveness. He takes us into the "labyrinth of his painting", a universe saturated with battles, pornographic scenes, and populated by monstrous characters, which in his early days is similar to comics and advertising imagery. He tells us of his inner violence and takes, not without humor, a look at our world which he considers "grotesque" and which he depicts with dizzying frenzy and voracious creative imagination. A leading artist in French contemporary art, Robert Combas has been involved in the return to painting and figuration on the international art scene since the 1980s.
