Catholic Funeral Rites presents and describes the religious, para-religious, and customary rites in Catholic Europe, which then spread throughout the world through evangelization. Funerals, involving the community, accompany the deceased, alleviate the anxiety of death, and soothe survivors. Funeral rites have been structured, enriched, and adapted to each era. Over the centuries, we have witnessed the democratization of mortuary practices. The deceased are less and less anonymous, moving from the common grave to the personal tomb, while the liturgy has become more uniform. Modern life over the last half-century has imposed drastic simplifications, and many of the rites and customs still alive in rural Europe after the war (1945) have disappeared. Bernard Berthod was born in 1952. Doctor of Letters and curator of the Musée d'art religieux de Fourvière in Lyon, he has been a member of ICOM Costume since 1991, and vice-president since 2013. He has been a historian and specialist in liturgical art since defending his thesis on the Lyon goldsmith Armand-Calliat in 1984.
