The retrospective dedicated to Belgian artist Rick Wouters (1882-1916) presented by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, in partnership with the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, is exceptional. For the first time, the most important collection of the artist's works is brought together in a single exhibition. An immense artist and meteoric revelation, Rik Wouters, born in Mechelen in 1882, is renowned for his painting and sculpture, but he was also a highly talented draftsman and engraver. His work is vibrant and colorful, far removed from the dramas that marked his life until his untimely death in 1916, at the age of 33. Traditionally considered the leading figure of Brabant Fauvism, Rik Wouters skillfully wields an abundance of color and authentic, simple, and touching subjects. His style is nevertheless avant-garde, while recalling Ensor, Cézanne, and Renoir. His dazzling talent has left its mark on several generations of artists and leaves us a fascinating legacy, that of an essential master of modern art in Belgium.
