"The coast of Japan is still invisible, but already the snows of the volcano rise into the clouds like a magical apparition. [...] Here we are at the tip of Asia; we have just traveled halfway around the world; we are beginning our visit to the countries of the Orient with Japan, the one that has remained closed to Europeans the longest." (Théodore Duret, Voyage en Asie, 1874) Thus begins the adventure that will make Henri Cernuschi one of the most important collectors of his time.
From Japan to India, via China, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, the journey he made with Théodore Duret was punctuated by discoveries that inspired the visionary project of creating one of the first museums dedicated to Asian art in France. Published on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Henri Cernuschi's return from Asia in 1873, this work invites us to rediscover the itinerary of the traveler and collector whose innovative contribution enabled the emergence in Europe of the revolution in taste known as Japonism.
