The Petit Palais, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, is exhibiting a selection of 180 etchings by Rembrandt that have belonged to the museum's collections since the Dutuit brothers' bequest in 1902. This exhibition will be presented as a double tribute: a tribute to Rembrandt, whose four hundredth birthday is being celebrated this year in Europe and the United States, and a tribute to Eugène Dutuit (1807-1886), who brought together some of the master's most splendid etched works that can be admired today. Over 400 pages, the author delivers a text combining scientific rigor and literary style, punctuated by numerous illustrations. Head of the department of old engravings at the Petit Palais, the curator updates knowledge on the Rembrandt collection from the Dutuit bequest in 1902. The reader will become familiar with a collection comprising some 370 sheets by the master, rarely shown due to their fragility, the Petit Palais holding several ''states'' of certain works. This catalog adopts a chronological, then thematic plan, chosen for the scenography. Within the three large chronological sections corresponding to the major changes that articulate the evolution of Rembrandt's graphic style, the author deals with the following themes: Rembrandt's Self-portraits, Portraits, Biblical Subjects and Saints, Mythological and Genre Subjects and Studies, Landscapes. Particular care has been taken with the iconography, including the reproduction of certain paintings, in order to clarify the author's point. Furthermore, the appendices of this reference work include the illustrated inventory of the etchings, preserved at the Petit Palais. The watermarks as well as the collection marks noted on the works are also referenced. Finally, this catalog concludes with the essential bibliographies on Rembrandt (books, periodicals, and exhibition catalogs).
