Originally intended as a preface to Tendres stocks, this winding introduction reads more like “a short course in literature.” There is little mention of Paul Morand, except for his style, which astonished Proust to the point that he wanted to deliver a personal analysis on the subject, from Racine to Baudelaire, from Boileau to Sainte-Beuve, in contrast to Anatole France, who declared at the time that “all singularity in style must be rejected.” In this matter, nothing is more essential than these pages by Marcel Proust.
