This book provides a better understanding of the relationship between religion and power within Roman communities, from the Second Punic War to the end of the Severan Empire. With ritual practices as its guiding thread, it focuses on three issues: institutions, actors in their spaces and practices, and changes in response to evolving historical situations. The investigation is informed by the historiographical renewals that have taken place over the past two generations in the history of religions as well as in the political and social history of the Roman world.
